PTC-Ceramic
 
PTC -ceramic belongs to the group of passive electronic component parts. This ceramic of Barium Titanate and other metal oxides is distinguished by a rapid increase in resistance (do you mean -electrical resistance) over a narrow temperature band. PTC-ceramic is therefor well appointed for overload protection in electrical switches, thermal protection for windings in electric motors or as a self-regulating heating element.

Material
  Posistors / PTC- resistors consist of polycrystalline Barium Titanate ceramics which become semi- conductive by doping with elements having a valency of 3 or 5.

Production
  Barium carbonate, Titanium dioxide and other raw materials are mixed, calcined and granulated. Pressing the granulated material forms the required shapes. After sintering at temperatures between 1200 and 1400°C electrical elements are attached and where necessary wrapped.

Characteristics
Posistors are temperature dependant parts where the value of resistance increases considerably, over several powers of ten, at certain temperatures (reference temperatures). Ratings can be found in the diagrams.

Applications
Posistors are mainly used as temperature sensors in Metrology and control techniques. Also as digital limit selectors for engine and machine protection. Other fields of application are in self regulating heating elements for extra low and supply voltage, switching delay elements for engine starting, demagnetisation and overload protection.
